Porcelain Perfect - How porcelain veneers can help shape your smile

Is your smile suffering from:

Discolouration

Visible wear and tear

Chips or breakages

Irregularly shaped teeth

Gaps between your teeth?

Why Porcelain Veneers

If so, the application of porcelain veneers may be the perfect solution!

Also known as dental veneers, porcelain veneers or dental porcelain laminates are material shells which are customised to fit your smile seamlessly.

These super thin shells are matched to the colour of your choice and are adhered to the front of your existing teeth to change their colour, their shape, size or even length!

How Natural will porcelain veneers look?

Because porcelain veneers are completely custom made for the individual tooth, they appear to be very natural and blend in well with the rest of your smile.

In fact, small imperfections, indents and discolouration can occur in porcelain veneers over time. This is actually a positive effect, as it adds to the natural appearance of your smile!

How are porcelain veneers applied?

As with any of our procedures at Dentist Mandy, the first part of the process is careful and friendly consultation where we work out the exact requirements of your smile and what you are comfortable with.

Once we have worked through the consultation phase, we prepare the tooth. Sometimes this involves some polishing of the enamel surface in order to make certain that the surface of your tooth is smooth and able to allow perfect adherence of the veneer.

The amount of enamel structure your dentist needs to remove to accommodate the new veneers would depend on your original teeth condition (sharp and shade), the ideal aesthetic that you would like to see, and what the long term plan is for your overall dental condition. In some circumstances, you may require a local anaesthetic to make sure you are relaxed and pain free.

After the veneers are made by our selected excellent dental laboratory, we will try the veneers inside your mouth and then check that the shape and colour of the veneer is in harmony with the rest of your smile. Once you are happy with the new veneers, your tooth is then chemically cleaned and the veneer is carefully cemented in place by our professionals.

Between the appointments, we often cover the prepped teeth surfaces with temporary veneer material.

Are porcelain veneers right for me?

Any dental procedure is a collaborative effort. We are big advocates for allowing enough consideration time, obtaining a professional consultation and weighing up all of your options. At Dentist Mandy, we pride ourselves on providing you with all of the right information for you to make an informed and happy decision.

In some situations, porcelain veneers are not a great option for you to consider. If you have any of the following, you may want to look at other cosmetic options:

Gum disease

Misaligned teeth that require orthodontic work (over or under bites)

Significant tooth decay

Also, if you suffer from excessive tooth grinding (bruxism), porcelain veneers may not be suitable as you can quickly grind down the veneers and damage your teeth below.

How long will my porcelain veneers last?

There is no way of telling how long your veneers will last, but we can say that most clients report great veneers for at least a decade! In some cases this will be even longer, based on how well you care for them, your style of diet and the medications you may take. It’s critical too that you don’t chew on foreign objects like pens or plastic to make sure your porcelain veneers stay in shape.

The best care for your veneers means a visit to the dentist at least twice a year for a thorough cleaning and check-up.

How can I find out more?

Porcelain veneers require a considered approach. We encourage you to come into our practice and have a consultation with one of our professionals so we can talk you through the process, options and maintenance.
